So, Urban Decay… the grey area of vegan beauty.
Urban Decay have a parent company, which is another larger company that owns a smaller one, and in Urban Decay’s case that parent company is L’Oréal. L’Oréal is basically a giant evil corporation, and it is no secret that they do test on animals and they do sell their products within China.
Now, although Urban Decay themselves do not test on animals, it’s a grey area due to the fact they are owned by L’Oréal. Personally I think it’s up to yourself if you buy vegan products from Urban Decay, we really should be supporting vegan cruelty free products wherever they come from, but at the end of the day the money is indirectly going into L’Oréal pocket, so it is a tough one.
As far as I am aware Urban Decay do not sell in China, here is some information I found on Wikipedia.
“In 2009, Urban Decay received approval by coalition for consumer information on cosmetics, and PETA awarded the company with the fifth annual Best Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Line award.
However, PETA removed Urban Decay from their list of cruelty-free companies following Urban Decay’s announcement on June 6, 2012 that they would begin selling products in China, a country known to conduct animal testing on products before releasing them to the public. A month later, on July 6, 2o12, Urban Decay announced that it would not sell its products in China.
As of 2014, Urban Decay does not employ animal testing in the creation of its products. PETA and The Leaping Bunny Program, certify the brand as cruelty-free.”
I also noticed a few articles/blog posts that said Urban Decay’s UK site did not show the The Leaping Bunny Program logo or any cruelty free logo, but that is false as they still show the logos at the bottom of their page.
